There has been some confusion about the exact programming requirements for the Programming for Big Data module.
This module covers 3 different programming environments - SAS, R and Hadoop (Java programming). There is an expectation that all who take this module are competent programmers. Experience in SAS programming is not necessarily required but some knowledge of R and Java is required.
The Hadoop section of this module gives students the most problems. It does not just require Java programming experience but also requires general systems integration experience. Hadoop is installed on a Linux virtual machine. The Java code is developed in Eclipse outside of the VM and data and jar files need to be passed to the VM to be run. The environment setup and management can prove to be difficult for some students who do not have adequate programming experience.
Please note also that there are limited spaces (max 25) on this module across both part time and full time students.
If there are any specific questions - please contact Sarah Jane Delany.
