Funded MPhil (Masters by research) opportunity

MPhil: "Novel interpretations and models of prostate cancer patient outcomes with machine learning".

DIT is part of a medical image processing project in collaboration with UCD, Beaumont Hospital and St. James Hospital. A cohort of prostate cancer patients has been studied over a number of years and rich datasets are available about those patients. The current project seeks to supplement the previous datasets with Raman Imaging to extract further information from tissue slides so stronger predictive models of patient outcomes are possible when the Raman datasets are merged with the existing colour images and clinical histories.

The main tasks to be performed will be firstly in Raman dataset consolidation, collation and reconciliation with previous datasets so all data about each patient can be compared and contrasted easily and machine learning models can be readily built from the reconciled datasets. Secondly, the state of the art in machine learning is to be applied to find the most reliable models of patient outcomes.

As part of DIT’s role in this project an MPhil will be funded and applications are sought from an applicant with an existing MSc/MEngSc or equivalent or a strong Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science or a similar discipline with a strong computing component. A candidate with a strong background in image processing and the state of the art in machine learning is preferred. Furthermore, a strong background in raw source coding will be considered an advantage. Opportunities may arise to progress onto a full PhD program subject to continuation of this line of research.

The project is expected to start in January / February. Financial support of student fees plus an annualised stipend of 18000 will be provided. Extension and registration to PhD will depend on performance and securing additional funding.

Interested applicants should contact Dr. Patrick Jackman patrick.jackman@dit.ie with an up to date copy of their CV by January 20th.
